Hail, Lightning Threat: Thunderstorm Warning
A thunderstorm is a powerful weather event that can bring strong winds, heavy rain, hail, and lightning. It's important to be aware of the dangers of thunderstorms and to take precautions to stay safe.
Understanding Thunderstorms
Thunderstorms develop when warm, moist air rises into a cooler atmosphere. As the air rises, it cools and condenses into clouds. The updrafts and downdrafts within the clouds create strong winds and can lead to hail and lightning.
Hail
Hail is a form of precipitation that consists of balls or lumps of ice. Hail forms when water droplets in a thunderstorm cloud freeze and accumulate layers of ice as they circulate within the cloud. Hailstones can range in size from small peas to grapefruit or larger.
Lightning
Lightning is a sudden and powerful discharge of electricity that occurs within a thunderstorm cloud or between the cloud and the ground. Lightning can cause fires, damage electrical equipment, and even be fatal.
Thunderstorm Warning
A thunderstorm warning is issued when a thunderstorm with severe weather, such as hail or strong winds, is occurring or imminent in a specific area.
Safety Tips During a Thunderstorm Warning:
Inside:
- Seek shelter indoors: Avoid windows and doors.
- Unplug electronic devices: Lightning can damage electronics.
- Stay away from plumbing: Water can conduct electricity.
- Don't use the phone: Landlines can conduct electricity.
Outside:
- Seek shelter immediately: Find a sturdy building or a hard-top vehicle.
- Avoid open fields and tall trees: These are prime targets for lightning.
- Stay away from water: Water is an excellent conductor of electricity.
- Do not use a cell phone: Cell phones can attract lightning.
If Caught in a Thunderstorm:
- Stay low to the ground: Squat down with your feet together and your head tucked down.
- Avoid touching metal objects: Metal can conduct electricity.
- Wait 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder before resuming activities: Lightning can strike as far as 10 miles from a thunderstorm.
Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
By following these safety tips, you can help to minimize your risk of injury or death during a thunderstorm.
