Malibu, CA (October 26, 2023) - The Malibu area experienced a series of three minor earthquakes within a span of 24 hours, starting early Tuesday morning. While the tremors caused a slight shaking sensation, no damage has been reported.
The first quake, with a magnitude of 2.8, struck at 3:15 AM PST on Tuesday, October 24th. Its epicenter was located approximately 5 miles southwest of Malibu. The second tremor, measuring 2.5, occurred at 11:47 AM PST the same day, with its epicenter located about 4 miles west of Malibu.
The final quake, the strongest of the three, registered a magnitude of 3.1 and occurred at 1:32 AM PST on Wednesday, October 25th. The epicenter was located around 3 miles south of Malibu.
Local authorities have reported receiving numerous calls from residents who felt the tremors. However, no injuries or significant damage have been reported. The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) Seismological Laboratory confirmed the earthquake activity.
While the quakes were relatively small, they serve as a reminder of the active seismic nature of the region. California lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) encourages residents to prepare for potential earthquake events by securing heavy objects, having a plan for emergency communication, and maintaining a disaster supply kit.
Experts advise staying calm in the event of an earthquake, seeking cover under a sturdy piece of furniture, and staying away from windows and walls.
The Malibu community remains vigilant and prepared for future seismic activity, continuing to practice earthquake safety measures.
