5.1 Earthquake Jolts West Texas, No Major Damage Reported
Odessa, TX - A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck West Texas on Tuesday morning, shaking residents awake and sending tremors across the region. The quake, which occurred at approximately 4:30 AM local time, was centered near the town of Mentone, about 40 miles southeast of Odessa. While the earthquake was felt widely, there have been no reports of significant damage or injuries.
Minor Damage, No Injuries
“The earthquake was definitely felt here in Odessa, but luckily there have been no reports of any major structural damage,” said Mayor David Turner. “We are still assessing the situation, but early reports suggest minor damage to some buildings, including cracks in walls and broken windows.”
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has reported that the earthquake was felt as far away as Lubbock, about 150 miles to the north. The USGS also confirmed that there have been no reports of injuries related to the earthquake.
Growing Concerns Over Seismic Activity
This recent earthquake is the latest in a series of seismic events to hit West Texas in recent years. The region has seen a significant increase in seismic activity in recent years, which some experts attribute to the increased hydraulic fracturing and wastewater disposal activities associated with the oil and gas industry.

The National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) recommends taking the following steps to prepare for an earthquake:
- Develop an emergency plan: This should include an evacuation route, a meeting place, and communication strategies.
- Secure heavy objects: Secure bookcases, mirrors, and other heavy objects that could fall and cause injury.
- Create an emergency kit: This kit should include food, water, a first-aid kit, a flashlight, a battery-powered radio, and other essential supplies.
